Flagship has a passion for stylish, sophisticated weddings and events. This is one of the many reasons why we have teamed up with the amazing craftsmen at Sperry Tents from Massachusetts USA. Flagship Events exclusively uses Sperry Tents made by the Sperry Family in Massachusetts USA.
These are classic handmade ivory coloured sailcloth and Spruce pole tents that require no lining or frilly detailing.
We have the exclusive license to these tents in New Zealand and whether you’re approaching them from a distance or standing beneath their soaring canopy, there is really nothing else like the experience of being at an event held within a Sperry Tent.
The natural colour of the sailcloth reflects a warm and embracing light viewed from both inside and out. The high sides which can be covered or left open as required, provide for perfect sightlines and extended views whether standing or seated within the tent.
All tents have a hire period of 72 hours, giving you a full day before the event and a full day after the event if you require. Please note a council consent is required for all events. It is up to the client to obtain this unless arranged prior with Flagship Events.
"Selecting an event tent goes beyond size and guest count. Choosing the style and quality of a tent is just as important as selecting an indoor venue that resonates. A tent needs to be a visually appealing backdrop, one that photographs well and complements both lighting and décor. The detailed craftsmanship of our canopies is purposeful and reflects the importance of any well-documented occasion."
"We were very happy with the marquee. It really set the scene for the wedding and all the guests loved it. With such positive feedback from all, I can highly recommend your team and the Manhattan." Pam Vondervoort
The Flagship Events Company was established by Patch Reynolds and Ted Thorp.
They have both worked extensively in the yachting and hospitality industries.
Combining their backgrounds of event management and building, they have experience working with the most demanding clients and conditions onboard some of the world’s largest super-yachts. They have returned to New Zealand to put all this experiece to good use by creating The Flagship Events Company.
From their experiences at home and abroad the pair have come to appreciate attention to detail, quality of craftsmanship and the simple level of elegance that makes some products a cut above the rest. This is what led them to the doors of the Sperry family on the East Coast of the USA.
They believed they had a shared philosophy on what it takes to make an event truly special.
They worked with them, talked with them and learned from them. They watched them mill the Spruce from their own forest for the spectacular centre poles, watched the hand sewing and stitching that goes in to every sail cloth canopy and most importantly got to understand the philosophy and passionate attention to detail that goes in to every single tent made by the Sperry Family.
They immediately knew they had found the right partner and then undertook the extraordinary logistics of getting home seven meter spruce poles, hundreds of meters of handmade sail cloth and the hundreds of detailed accessories required to bring a Sperry tent to life.
This is the first time such a tent has ever been seen on the New Zealand shores. The natural and elegant aspects of the Sperry tent combined with our beautiful landscapes, makes this an obvious choice for your special event.
The Sperry Tents Story: Developing the world’s finest tent.
Sperry Tents is a family-owned company through and through. It began with Steve Sperry, a talented sailmaker who started his career during the ’60s working at Hood Sailmakers under the legendary Ted Hood. In the mid-’70s, Steve struck out on his own, starting Sperry Sails in Marion, Mass., where he and one employee built sails and did custom canvas work for local sailors. During the following years, Sperry Sails’ much-loved, colorful sun logo was seen up and down the coast of New England and the Sperry Sails brand became known and respected among the sailing community.
One upcoming weekend, he was heading to a party and decided to try his hand at making a party tent. He had everything he needed on hand: sailcloth, sewing machines, grommets, nautical line. He even crafted the wooden support poles at his own personal sawmill, where he also milled the lumber to build his house. For an extra flourish, he sewed in a huge version of the Sperry Sails logo, loaded it into his truck, and was off, not knowing that he was unwittingly starting a revolution in the world of event tents.
Fast-forward to 1996, when Steve’s sons, Tim and Matt Sperry, returned from circumnavigating the globe on a 41-foot sailboat with three other friends. Tim joined his father’s company and established Sperry Tents as a separate rental entity, while Matt stayed on the Sperry Sails side, working on sails, tents, and directing and enhancing the family’s signature fabric designs.
Today, Tim Sperry is still president of Sperry Tents and helms the original office, Sperry Tents Marion, while advancing the brand’s reach by signing on privately owned and licensed Sperry Tents providers both nationally and internationally. Meanwhile Matt took over from his dad as Sperry Sails president and launched sister company Sperry Fabric Architecture, which manufactures each and every Sperry Tent as well as custom fabric structures for commercial venues and private homes.
